Development and commercialization of novel diagnostic assays for the early detection of acute dengue virus infection (2006–2009)

Abstract:
This project aims to develop novel dengue virus diagnostic assays to detect infection in patients earlier than existing commercial tests. The assays will be based on the detection of the viral protein NS1 in patient sera. The development and use of new reagents in ELISA and point-of care diagnostics in a clinical setting will be investigated. In contrast with available serological assays where seroconversion is not detected until three to five days after onset of symptoms NS1 based diagnostics may have the ability to detect infection one day after onset, and so provide increased opportunities for appropriate patient care.
