A pan-genome reverse vaccinology approach to disease prevention in farmed fish (2014–2017)

Abstract:
Streptococcal pathogens cause serious diseases in humans and animals including fish. They are difficult to prevent by vaccination because new variants or serotypes rapidly evolve. This project will use Illumina sequencing to create pan-genomes for two fish pathogenic streptococcus species. Then, using our established bioinformatics pipeline, we will take a reverse-vaccinology approach by identifying and evaluating conserved vaccine targets that are critical to virulence across all strain variants for each species. This will allow development of broadly cross-protective vaccines for use in farmed fish.
