Chemically Re-Engineering Bioactive Natural Products using Fragment Based Drug Design (2013–2015)

Abstract:
Bioactive natural products have been crucial in the discovery of new medicines and the security of food sources for the world's societies past and present. Natural product based drug and agrichemical development, however, is far from optimum as the chemical properties associated with natural products are not often amenable for transfer to the clinic or field, hence many potentially beneficial natural products are not further developed by industry. This proposal will pioneer the concept of bioactive natural product re-engineering facilitated by fragment based drug design, which will capitalise on the bioactive features of natural products while installing the required properties to become drug and agrichemical candidates.
