Developing a paradigm shift in new pharmaceutical and agrochemical design (2012–2016)

Abstract:
Pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals play a very important role in delivering medicines and food to the modern world. Aspirations to improve world-wide living standards together with increasing population growth, and drug and insect resistance is placing impossible demands on current technologies. This proposal will provide an exciting route for the rapid discovery of new pharmaceutical and agrochemical compounds. Many of the current compounds contain derivatives of benzene. In this program the 'benzene' will be replaced by Cubane, which contains a unique balance of chemical similarities and differences to that of benzene, breathing new life into the myriad of successful biologically active molecules.
