School retention through alternative schooling: Towards a socially just approach to education (2012–2015)

Abstract:
The aim of this project is to study schools operating on the margins of the mainstream, often referred to as alternative schools, which have as their stated aim the provision of a socially just and inclusive education. In analysing practices in such schools it will provide accounts of what is possible in the current moment and consider the ways in which mainstream schools can better their existing practices. The project is significant in that it will contribute to the national COAG priority of lifting Year 12 retention rates to 90% by 2015. It is also significant in that applies sophisticated theoretical understandings of social justice to current practices in schools. It will support improving retention in mainstream schools.
