Overview

Shuang is an internationally recognised intercultural communication expert, specialising in the areas of ageing and immigration, acculturation, identity negotiation, and intercultural relations. Her research examines how older people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds build a sense of home as they live and age in a foreign land; how family and community care can be integrated to provide culturally appropriate, accessible and sustainale care for older people; how older people interact with their physical, social, cultural, and digital environments to develop attachment to place; and the consequences of these interactions for well-being. Shuang's work has been published in high-ranking international journals, and two sole authored books: Identity, hybirdity and cultural home (2015; Rowman & Littlefield) and Chinese migrants ageing in a foreign land (2019; Routledge). Her lead-authored textbook, Introducing intercultural communication: Global cultures and contexts, is in its 4th edition, and previous three editions have been adopted in 26 countries across 4 continents, with holdings in libraries of prestigeous institutions including Stanford University, Yale University, University of Oxford, University of Cape Town, and University of Zurich. Research Interests

  • Integrating community with family care for diverse older Australians
Shuang's research explores policy and practice avenues to enable collaboration between community service providers and families to support older Australians from diverse cultural backgrounds to age well in Australia. She is leading a multidisciplinary research team to work on an ARC linkage grant (2022-2025), with two partner organisations: The Federation of Ethnic Communities Council of Australia (FECCA) and Multicultural Communities Council Gold Coast (MCCGC). Expected outcomes of Shuang's research will inform policies and practice in the aged care sector.
  • Building a sense of home
Shuang has conducted extensive research in the area of place attachment and place identity. Her research addresses the broad question of what migrants from diverse cultural backgrounds do to build identity, belonging, and a sense of home in their settlement country. She has researched on migrants who resided in the settlement country for decades, 1.5 generation and second generation migrants to advance understanding of the meaning of home from the perspectives of migrants and the resources including digital resources they draw on. She is interested in how digital resources and competencies contribute to improving the well-being of migrants who live in-between cultures.
  • Older migrants ageing in a foreign land
Shuang undertakes research in the ageing experiences of older migrants as they live and age in a foreign land. Her research is interdisciplinary, integrating theories of acculturation, gerontology, and intercultural communication to identify enablers and barriers to ageing well in a foreign land, especially how we can improve social and cultural connectedness among older people to reduce social isolation and improve well-being. Shuang's research outcomes have impacted practice in practice at community aged care providers in terms of informing the delivery of culturally appropriate care, and tailoring services to the needs of the diverse ageing population.

Research Impacts

Shuang works extensively with communities, community aged care service providers, and government offices to identify practice and policy avenues to support older people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to age well in a foreign land. The impact of her research is evidenced by:

  • Her appointment as the Research Advisor of Diversicare/Ethnic Communities Council of Queensland
  • Invited keynote presentations at conferences and invited media presentations
  • Translation of her research into guidelines for practice of community care providers
  • The editorial responsibilities she carries for leading international journals in her field
