Research Interests

  • Metagenomics and the Microbiome
    Since my PhD I have been interested in the microbiome and it's links to host variation. Using it in a predictive way to help agriculture become more environmentally friendly while increasing our ability to feed the world means that we can have our beef, and eat it too.
  • The mammalian genome and its genes
    New technology is allowing us to look at things that were invisible just a few years before. Applying new technology to understand similarities and differences between individual genomes allows us to look at aspects of the genome and its genes at a scale never before possible.

  • I have a range of research projects avalible. I strongly prefer 8 unit or more projects - but will consider shorter projects for the right applicant. The avalible projects include a range of techniques and focuses. Please email me requesting information on avalible projects and I will send you the project summary booklet. To be considered for a project you will need to send a CV, accedemic transcript, and an example of your technical writeing (for example a lab report from another class, or an assignment).

    All projects will be tailored to the student reseracher based on their skills, experience level, and desired outcomes.

This project will use cutting edge technology and data to gain insight into how the genes in the genome are regulated to cause shifts in the phenotype of an indivdual. Relevent majors: Bioinformatics, Animal Science, Biological Science, Statistics, Molecular Genetics.

  • Metagenomics is the study of genomes from a microbiome. We know that the microbiome controls important traits like greenhouse gas production from cattle, and feed conversion efficiency, but there is still a lot left to find out! This project will explore the microbiome of agricultural species, aiming to uncover important insight into how to make animal agriculture cleaner and greener while feeding the world. Relevent majors: Bioinformatics, Animal Science, Agricultural Science, Biological Science, Statistics, Molecular Genetics.

  • Genomics is a rapidly expanding feild. The 'invisible' variation within mammalian genomes, such as structural variants, can now be measured en masse. This project will explore genetic variation within the Brahman (cattle) genome, with the aim of increasing our knowledge of how the genome functions and leads to differeces between individuals. Relevent majors: Bioinformatics, Animal Science, Agricultural Science, Biological Science, Statistics, Molecular Genetics.
