Special Needs Cost: Estimating The Additional Expenditure In Raising Children With Disabilities (2006)

Abstract:
This is the first comprehensive Australian study to calculate the additional expenditure associated with raising a child with a disability or high medical needs. Costs are calculated by reference to a survey of 200 parents caring for disabled children and normative expert judgements about the goods and services required for children with different types and levels of disability. The adequacy and effectiveness of federal and state government benefits and services are assessed using these costs. The study also provides significant new information about the well-being, deprivation and social exclusion experienced by Australian families raising disabled children, and ways to improve their situation.
