Leaving welfare conditionality behind: exploring perceptions regarding (universal) basic income in Australia (2024)

Abstract:
Poverty is increasing in Australia and continues to be borne by the nation¿s most marginalised groups. Meanwhile, Australia¿s meagre and highly conditional social security payments not only contribute to, but are primary causes of, entrenched poverty. Now is the time to halt this trend by seriously considering alternatives, including (universal) basic income ([U]BI) ¿ a periodic/regular, individual, unconditional cash payment. This FREA will produce new insights into public and political attitudes regarding (U)BI, which is crucial for understanding possible opportunities/barriers to the future pursuit of an Australian (U)BI as an avenue for leaving harmful welfare conditionality behind and effectively tackling poverty.
