Novel Hybrid Nanotechnologies by Infiltration of Functional Polymers (2023–2026)

Abstract:
This project aims to develop a potentially disruptive technology for preparation of materials structured on the nm scale. Sequential infiltration synthesis (SIS), combines inorganic and organic materials by templating infiltrating an organic matrix with the building blocks of inorganic structures. The outcomes will be new understanding of the chemistry of SIS, and innovative processes for constructing 3D nanostructures. Currently researchers have examined a limited range of polymer starting materials and hence there is an incomplete understanding of the potential of the method. The investigators will bring their experience in microelectronics and polymer chemistry to introduce new concepts of manufacture, supporting emerging high nanotechnology industries in Australia. Their inventions will be protected by patenting. The materials prepared using SIS will have applications in energy, environmental and potentially health technologies. In the next stage of development the investigators will partner with industry including multinational chemical manufacturers to address specific technical challenges.
