UWA - UQ Bilateral Research Collaboration Awards - The Stigmatizaton of Widows and Divorcees (Janda) in Indonesian Society (2013)

Abstract:
The Indonesian word janda refers to both widows and divorcees in Indonesian society. Janda suffer significant stigmatization and they figure disproportionately among the poor. An estimated 9 million households in Indonesia are headed by women, mostly janda. This group has never been studied before. Indonesianist gender specialists at UWA and UQ will study the socio economic, cultural and legal position of widows and divorcees in Indonesia.
