High Performance Multifunctional Hierarchical Structured Membrane for Water Processing (2011–2013)

Abstract:
This project aims to synthesize a new leading edge water processing technology. The key concept of the research is the production of a multi functional hierarchical membrane comprised of TiO2, graphene and polymer. Anti-fouling is largely reduced owing to the oxidative properties of TiO2 while high flux and selective is attained by tailoring ultra micropores in graphene for water diffusion only. Finally, the polymer confers mechanical strength and shape flexibility. The membranes will be investigated to understand the relationship between structures, composition and water transport properties. The outcomes will lead to the development of the next generation of high performance membranes for water processing, including desalination.
