Elaborating a model of learning to teach mathematical inquiry (2007–2009)

Abstract:
Our future generation of innovators in science and industry require deeper and more flexible understandings of mathematics. Unfortunately, the teaching of school maths frequently suffers from rule-based approaches, inhibiting creativity and curiosity. For teachers to create extended open-ended learning experiences for their students which foster flexible and insightful mathematical thinking, they must develop this capability themselves as learners. This project elaborates a new model of teachers learning to teach open-ended inquiry in mathematics and statistics, creating a learning environment which develops rather than hinders creativity, talent, and generative thinking - skills critical to fostering the nation s budding scientists.'',
