Greatly Improved Rectification By Molecular Diodes (2006–2008)

Abstract:
The molecular diode represents the smallest active component in the molecular electronics toolkit, and while a small number of organic molecules with the ability to rectify current have been developed, the rectification ratios achieved to date are too small to be of practical use. The aim of this project is to dramatically improve the rectification ratio achievable from organic molecular diodes, using a combination of organic synthesis, thin film fabrication and molecular-resolution characterisation techniques. Outcomes will be film devices capable of current-voltage performance up to two orders of magnitude greater than is currently possible, in order to rival inorganic semiconductor devices.
