Social Influences on Five Key Steps in Understanding Mind for Children with Autism, Deafness or Typical Development (2006–2008)

Abstract:
New evidence shows there are five ordered steps in growth of the everyday understanding of the human mind that equips children to communicate and socialise effectively. Until these steps are mastered, the social world may seem almost impossible to understand. Thus it is crucial to find out what assist progress through each step, and the causes for delays in those with autism or deafness. This project seeks to identify early social and conversational experiences that may slow or speed progress through the sequence. Results will advance scientific debates over the theory of mind, and will supply the knowledge base for interventions to foster inter-personal understanding and remedy problems linked with autism or deafness.
