Refugees' employment aspirations and inter-generational communication about future occupational pathways (2013–2015)

Abstract:
This novel project is the first in Australia to investigate the employment aspirations of recently arrived refugee parents and how they communicate with their children about future occupational pathways. We explore the formative influence refugee parents have, as well as how family communication about employment is affected by migration and acculturation. Successful integration of visibly and culturally different refugees is an acid test of Australian settlement, social inclusion policies, and multiculturalism. Thus, the project outcomes will make a significant contribution to policy and service delivery in refugee resettlement at the local and national level.
