The emergence of farming beyond the Fertile Crescent at Boncuklu Hoyuk, Central Turkey (2012–2014)

Abstract:
Multi-disciplinary archaeological research will determine when and how farming first appeared beyond the Fertile Crescent in mainland Asia through investigation of the transitional Neolithic site of Boncuklu Hoyuk on Turkey's Konya Plain. Contextual analysis of the first use and initial history of crop-plants, including investigation of settlement, technology, environment, diet and human provenance, will provide a definitive test of whether migration was the key driver of farming emergence in this region. Building on more than a decade of research, this high impact project fosters international collaboration, refines our knowledge of a key event in history and illuminates the origins of the world reknowned nearby site of Çatalhöyük.
