Establishing a Missing Link between the Global Nitrogen and Carbon Cycles - Anaerobic Methane Oxidation Coupled to Denitrification (2012–2014)

Abstract:
We will establish the role of anaerobic methane oxidation coupled to nitrate and nitrite reduction in the global nitrogen and carbon cycles. This process has recently been demonstrated in the Netherlands and in Australia using laboratory enrichment cultures. We will verify the presence of this process in various aquatic environments and establish its contribution to the global nitrogen and carbon conversions. We will identify and characterise the key organisms responsible for this process and determine the coupling between this process and other nitrogen and carbon conversion processes in aquatic environments. We will reveal a previously unrecognised but potentially significant link between the global nitrogen and carbon cycles.
