Translating zoo visitors' behavioural intentions into conservation actions using evidence-based post-visit experiences (2012–2016)

Abstract:

Internationally there is an imperative for humans to adopt more environmentally sustainable behavior. Zoos are uniquely placed to assist in this task as they engage directly in conservation activities and are visited by 37% of the population each year. This project aims to develop website-based learning experiences to reinforce, complement and extend zoos¿ on-site conservation messages, and provide motivation and support for lifelong environmental learning and visitors' adoption of sustainable behaviours in their everyday lives. The iterative research process will deliver an evidence-based resource designed to increase the percentage of visitors who translate their post-visit behavioural intentions into conservation-related actions.
