Next generation satellite tools for understanding change in coral reef ecosystems due to multiple global and local stressors. (2012–2019)
- Abstract:
- Climate change represents a serious threat to the Great Barrier Reef and other coral reef ecosystems. Satellite measurements of sea surface temperature (SST) have performed relatively well in the detection of underlying stresses that result in damaging episodes of mass coral bleaching. However, the algorithms used for these measurements are based on temperature alone and often fail to properly assess the severity of an impact on a coral reef. This Linkage Project will improve the accuracy and precision of these satellite measurements by including other variables, such as solar irradiance and water quality, into the algorithms. This will be achieved by an international research industry partnership between UQ, NOAA, GBRMPA and AIMS.
