Topological properties of exactly-solvable, two-dimensional quantum systems (2011–2013)

Abstract:
Quantum systems confined to two dimensions exhibit exotic topological characteristics not found in three-dimensional quantum systems. They are presently experimentally accessible but lacking satisfactory theoretical understanding. A detailed analysis of models for such systems is necessary for the ultimate goal of topological quantum computing hardware to be realised. This project will capitalise on new mathematical approaches, developed by the Chief Investigator, for analysing the topology of two-dimensional quantum systems. Through these methods a more transparent picture of the topology and potential applications will emerge. These results will inform and impact on future advances in topology-based quantum technologies.
