Continental temperature and rainfall change during past global warming - a multiproxy approach involving clumped isotopes in speleothems (2009)

Abstract:
This project aims to reconstruct past climate and environment using multiple climate proxies archived in stalagmites already collected from Australia and China. This pilot study is significant as it will explore the potential to use the revolutionary clumped isotope thermometry in conjunction with C-O-Sr isotopes and trace elements in these stalagmites to quantify palaeo- temperature, rainfall and other climate parameters, which are critical for better understanding of past climate and for improving climate simulation and prediction models. The results will enable cross-regional and inter-hemispheric comparison of temperature and rainfall change during major episodes of global warming (20-10 and 140-129 thousand years ago, respectively).
