Stem cell-based interface tissue engineering (2009)

Abstract:
A functional, mechanically robust ligament-cartilage-bone and muscle-tendon-bone interface is vital to the successful integration and utilisation of prosthetic implants and engineered grafts and tissues. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) represent the most ideal cell source for targeted generation of these tissue interfaces. This project will develop tailored, biofunctional and scalable biomaterial platforms, capable of controlling the differentiation of MSCs into bone, cartilage and ligament, and thereafter, generating a graded bone-cartilage-ligament tissue for regeneration of the anterior cruciate ligament-bone tissue interface.
